Ways to make travelling safe and fun
• Identify the emergency exits when you check into your hotel. You'll want to know where they are if anything happens in the night.

• To avoid jet-lag, try to cut down on caffeine in the days before your flight. Then drink water or juice while flying - not alcohol, as it dehydrates you. You'll feel a lot better at the other end of the flight.

• I'm convinced that going for a walk right after you arrive at your destination - especially if it's sunny out - helps prevent jet-lag.

• Make sure you lock your valuables into the hotel safe.

• If an alarm goes off in your hotel, grab your wallet and your passport, and take the stairs. Don't get into an elevator.

• It's important to get a little bit lost in a new city - that's how you find those unforgettable, out-of-the-way places that aren't in the guidebooks.

• If you don't like your hotel, switch right away. It isn't going to get better, and sometimes there's a really great place right down the street.

• Try to blend in with the locals on the street. If you look like a tourist, or speak loudly in a foreign language, there's a bigger risk that you'll be robbed.

• Money belts feel stupid, but they really do stop thieves.

• Watch out for blood clots while flying - it's much more common than you think! If you're a smoker, or you take birth control pills, have bad circulation or are over the age of 50, make sure that you take off your shoes for the duration of the flight. Actually, everyone should take off their shoes. Also, it's important to stretch your legs - get up regularly to walk up and down the aisle. Even after you land, if you have pain in your legs, or anywhere else in your body, see a doctor immediately!
