Wondering how Erika Travel Insurance actually works? The following cases are about travelers who chose to buy Erika insurance. Remember - most people never actually have to use our insurance, but it's good to have just in case.
Medical insurance
The following is a real letter from a mother in California:
Dear Erika Travel Insurance:
While in Paris, my 13-year-old daughter became ill and we were unable to continue with our tour. I was quite distraught, being in a country where I could not speak the language, my daughter ill, knowing the tour bus could not wait for us. Our tour director called Erika Travel Insurance and was put in touch with [a representative called] Alex. He knew just what to do and assured us that he would take care of everything. We felt so much better.
A doctor was sent to our hotel room to examine my daughter and he determined she had the flu. Alex was with us every step of the way via telephone and when my daughter was able to travel again, he made all the arrangements for us to take a train to catch up with our tour. We were able to meet up with our group and had a great vacation.
Stolen property
Every two years, a 71-year-old widower used his pension money to travel to a new holiday destination. On each trip, he brought along a small video camera, so he could document his experiences. As he described it, that camera was his most precious possession – one of his greatest pleasures at home was watching and showing his travel films.
While on a trip to Russia, however, his camera was stolen. He contacted his tour guide, who contacted us. We evaluated the case, and although it was above and beyond our regular on-the-spot compensation policy - we decided that replacing the camera was extremely important for this particular traveler. We therefore granted the tour guide permission to compensate him for the actual cost of the camera, on the spot.
The traveler was able to buy a new camera while in Russia - something that made his trip (which could have been a great disappointment) into a real success.
Missed flight
The following case actually involved an Erika Travel Insurance employee, who went on a holiday to Greece.
After a relaxing one-week vacation, he decided to spend his last night on the island of Eghina, instead of in Athens. He calculated that by taking a ferry from Eghina to Piraeus the next morning, he would have plenty of time to make his 6pm flight.
The next morning, however, it turned out that the hydrofoil he needed to take couldn't sail. A windstorm and high waves left him stranded in Eghina until 4pm. He finally reached Athens at 6pm - just as his flight was supposed to leave. Fortunately, with Erika's help, he was able to re-book his ticket (cost-free) and take the next possible flight out of Athens.
